ANTALYA- Innovation-20 (I-20) Summit was held on November 13 in Antalya alongside the G20 leaders’ Summit. The Summit was organized by TEPAV and brought together high-level government officials, multilateral institutions and  the private sector.

The Summit highlighted the potential contribution of new technologies on sustainable growth and development and cross-border dimensions of technological transformation. In 2015, Think-20 Turkey brought the discussion of technological transformation and innovation into the agenda of the T20 and the G20. The T20 discussions on technology and innovation addressed developmental issues that were on the UN’s development agenda and were part of the Turkish G20 Presidency’s inclusiveness priority in 2015 Turkey.

The Summit began with welcoming remarks by Güven Sak, T20 Chair and TEPAV Managing Director. The first session “The Role of New Technologies in Achieving the G20’s Goals” focused on the contribution of new technologies on sustainable development and global economic growth. Panelists included Helen Mountford, Programme Director of New Climate Economy, Magdalena Yeşil, Founding Board Member and First Investor of Salesforce.com, Mario Pennisi, I-20 Australia Chair, Nathalie Moll, Secretary-General of EuropaBio and Richard Hsu, Ecosystem Builder of TEDxShanghai and Pan-Asia Network.

The second session “Information Technologies in Sustainable Development” emphasized the role of information technologies in enhancing productivity and contributing to sustainable development. Discussions also underlined the need for new global rules to govern the Internet (i.e. cybersecurity, privacy)  as well as the disruptive aspects of new technologies, especially to labor markets and employment patterns. The session moderated by Magdalena Yeşil included presentations by David A. Olive, Senior Vice President of Policy Development Support of ICANN, Heba Ramzy, Director of Corporate Affairs for Middle East and Africa of Microsoft, Katie Kulik, Senior SVP of CBS Interactive, Mehmet Kemal İnan, Founding Dean of Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences of Sabancı University, Ping Lang, Deputy Head of International Politics Theory of IWEP and Tien Tzuo, Founder and CEO of Zuora were the speakers.

The final session “The Role of Biotechnology in Sustainable Development and Global Health”  focused on the role of new technologies in providing solutions to public health globally. Discussions underlined the role of the G20 as a coordination platform to enhance the diffusion of  biotechnology, which is critical for achieving the developmental targets. The session was moderated by Selin Arslanhan Memis, Director of Center for Biotechnology Policy, TEPAV and  included presentations by Adrian Thomas, Vice President Global Market Access and Global Public Health of Janssen, Børge Diderichsen, Vice President of Novo Nordisk, JaeHyun Kim, Senior Director of Celltrion Healthcare Hungary, Jerry Lee, Deputy Director of National Cancer Institute and Fahrettin Kelestimur, President of Directorate of Health Institutes in Turkey.

The Summit ended with closing remarks by Rıfat Hisarcıklıoğlu’s, B20 Chair and President of the Turkish Chamber of Commerce  followed by  the handover ceremony of the Innovation-20  from T20 Turkey to the three institutions that will lead T20 China in 2016 -  Institute of World Economics and Politics (IWEP) 
at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at Renmin University of China (RDCY)   and Shanghai Institutes for International Studies (SIIS).
