Deindustrialization impact on overall employment, women’s employment and the number of businesses becomes visible
ANKARA- The contribution of the manufacturing industry to employment growth has been in a gradual decline. Employment growth rate in manufacturing was below the overall employment growth in February 2014.
The 27th issue of the TEPAV Employment Monitoring Bulletin reports that as of February 2014, the number of insured workers across Turkey increased year-on-year by 6.3 percent (738,000 people) to 12,486,000. Among the top 10 sectors in employment growth, 7 were in the services and 2 in construction sectors. Manufacture of wearing apparels was the only manufacturing industry sector in the top 10.
Employment in manufacturing industry increased by 149,000 (4.5 percent) year-on-year and by 15,000 (0.4 percent) month-on-month, reaching overall to 3,478,000. The 4.5-percent increase in manufacturing industry employment lagged behind the 6.3 percent improvement in overall insured employment.
With this recent trend, the share of manufacturing industry in overall employment declined from 30.2 percent in February 2009 to 27.9 percent.
Female employment also in decline
The number of insured women employed in the manufacturing industry increased year-on-year by about 49,000 (6.6 percent) and month-on-month by 3,000 (0.4 percent). Overall female employment therefore reached 787,000; however, women were as well affected by the overall trend in manufacturing industry employment. The share of manufacturing industry in women’s employment decreased from 25.8 percent in 2009 to 24.4 percent in 2014.
The number of manufacturing industry businesses dwindles
The number of businesses in the manufacturing industry grew year-on-year by 1,500 (0.6 percent) and reached 264,000 as of February 2014. The share of the sector in total number of businesses declined from 19.1 to 16.5 percent between 2009 and 2014.
The bulletin reports that these reflect the impact of deindustrialization on employment, women’s employment, and businesses.
