The regional upheaval that began with the war in Gaza and later expanded to Lebanon, Iran and the Gulf has enhanced Cyprus’s strategic, security and economic importance. As uncertainty grows across the region, Cyprus is also becoming more central to the emerging security architecture in the Eastern Mediterranean. At the same time, a new window of opportunity is opening for Cyprus to emerge as a regional economic hub, a role that had previously shifted from Beirut to the Gulf. To benefit from this changing environment, both sides of the island need to develop a common position and approach the prolonged Cyprus impasse with renewed pragmatism. The visible facts on the ground in the TRNC should not be dismissed; Turkish Cypriots need to become more visible and included in any future economic vision for the island.
