As of the end of August, there were 1,495,000 registered businesses.
ANKARA – The number of businesses declared to the Social Security Institution (SSI) increased by 101,000 between August 2011 and 2012. The number of businesses registered at the SSI therefore increased to 1,495,000. This corresponds to an annual increase of 7.2 percent. The monthly average of new registered businesses was slightly below 10,000.
The thirteenth issue of the TEPAV Employment Monitoring Bulletin reports that between July and August, the number of registered businesses decreased by almost 10,000. This was mostly due to the seasonality effect . The seasonally adjusted figures point at a monthly increase of around 9,000 in the number of registered businesses. The bulletin states:
“Over the last twelve months, 101,000 new businesses were registered. Around 20 percent of these are in the retail trade sector, 10 percent in the transportation sector, and 8 percent in the food and beverages services sector. Following these, wholesale trade and the office management and auxiliary services sector have a 6 percent share in new businesses each.
The number of manufacturing businesses increased by around 14,000 from 246,000 in August 2011 to 261,000 in August 2012. The rise was lead by the ready-to-wear apparel manufacturing sector with a share of 27 percent. The share of newly registered businesses in the furniture manufacturing sector in total manufacturing was around 14 percent, followed by those in the textiles manufacturing sector with 10.4 percent and manufacture of food products sector with 9.3 percent.”
Gaziantep, Adana and Hatay Recorded the Largest Increases in the Number of Businesses
Concerning the provincial distribution of new registered businesses, 33 percent were established in Istanbul, where as of August 2012 436,000 businesses were located, corresponding to 29.2 percent of the total in Turkey.
As of August 2012, Ankara had 117,000 registered businesses with a 7.8 percent share and Izmir had 106,000 businesses with a 7.1 percent share in the total.
Between August 2011 and 2012, the largest increase in the number of registered businesses was recorded in Gaziantep with 12 percent, followed by Adana and Hatay.
